Fit your board to its niche with custom fields

Every niche has a question visitors ask before they read a job. Is this role identified for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants? Does the employer sponsor visas? Which security clearance does it need? Custom fields store the answer. On boards built from the latest starter, add a custom field and it appears in the All filters sheet. Ask the builder when you want something more: a dropdown in the main search bar, or badges on your job cards.

Before you begin

You need access that can manage settings on the board, and a board built with the AI website builder. Cavuno-hosted boards show job custom fields on the job page but do not offer them as filters.

Used as a filter?

On boards built from the latest starter, every public custom field of these types is added to the All filters sheet automatically:

• Dropdown (single choice) or Single select
• Checkboxes (multiple choice) or Multi-select
• Yes / No toggle or Yes or no, shown as one checkbox. Ticked shows only jobs, companies or talent set to yes; unticked applies no filter.

Job fields appear on the jobs page, company fields on the companies page and the jobs page, and talent fields on the talent page. Number, text and collection reference fields are not added, and private profile fields never appear. To show a filter somewhere else, such as a dropdown in the main search bar, ask the builder.

Examples by niche

Job fields and company fields

A job field is answered on each job posting. Use it when two jobs at the same employer can have different answers. Whoever posts the job fills it in, on every posting form on your board.

A company field belongs to the company profile. Use it when the answer describes the employer, not one role. You or the company fill it in once, and every job that company posts can be filtered by it, as well as the company itself on the companies page. When the company's answer changes, its jobs follow within seconds.

If you are unsure, ask whether a single employer could post one job with each answer. If yes, make it a job field.

Set up the fields

Choose a dropdown, multi-select or yes-or-no type for anything you want to filter on: those are the types added to All filters. A controlled list keeps filters clean, where free text would give you "Govt", "Government", and "government dept". Number and text fields are not added to All filters.

A job field:

1. Open Settings → Job form.
2. In Custom fields, click Add field.
3. Enter the label, choose Dropdown (single choice), Checkboxes (multiple choice), Yes / No toggle, or Number, and add the options.
4. Save the field.

A company field:

1. Open Settings → Company profile.
2. In Custom fields, click Add field.
3. Enter the label, choose Single select, Multi-select, Yes or no, or Number, and add the options.
4. Turn on Show on public profile. Only public fields can become filters or badges.
5. Turn on Profile owner can edit if companies should choose their own answer. Leave it off if your team verifies it.
6. Save the field, then set the value on each company in Companies.

Ask the builder for custom layouts

The All filters sheet covers the common case. Open Website builder when you want a field somewhere else, or on a board built from an older starter. Name the field in your request. You do not need to list the options: ask for the dropdown to use the field's options, and it shows your current labels and keeps up with options you add or rename in Settings.

Mention the field by its label, and say whether it is a job field or a company field when both exist with similar names. Ask for one change at a time, then review it before the next.

Check the result

1. Open All filters, pick an option for each field, and confirm every job in the results matches it. Do the same for any dropdown the builder added.
2. Combine two filters and confirm the results match both.
3. Copy the filtered page's address into a new tab and confirm the same filters are selected.
4. Change a company's value in Companies, wait a few seconds, reload the filtered page, and confirm its jobs have moved.
5. Check the badges on desktop and mobile, including a job whose company has no value set.

Troubleshooting

If a field is missing from All filters, check that it is a dropdown, multi-select or yes-or-no field, and that a company or talent field is set to Show on public profile; private fields are never offered as filters. Boards built from an older starter do not add fields automatically: ask the builder to add the filter. If a filter returns no jobs, confirm the jobs or companies have that value saved. If a badge shows for some jobs and not others, the missing jobs or companies have no answer for that field yet.
