Sell digital products

Sell or give away files and links from your board: templates, reports, guides and booking links, with download limits, PDF stamping, buyer questions and reviews.

Digital products let you sell, or give away, anything a job seeker or employer downloads or opens: resume and cover letter templates, salary reports, interview question banks, trackers, study guides, a Notion or Canva template to copy, or a booking link. Buyers pay you through your own Stripe account, get a download page and an email with its link, and can come back to it whenever they need it.

A product is a type in your products catalogue, beside job posting plans, memberships and services. Buyers see it on your board's product pages, where they buy it and later download it.

Product pages, the download page and the buyer's purchases list are part of your board's website. Once your AI website builder site has product pages and a download page, Create product offers Digital product. On a site you build yourself with the Board SDK, create and manage products with the Operator API. Products you already have stay in your catalogue either way, and when the site has no product pages, the product's edit drawer says buyers can't see it yet.

Before you sell

Your board is the seller, so its privacy notice and terms of sale need to cover buyers before your first sale. Cavuno processes buyer data on your behalf, under the data processing agreement. Update your privacy notice to say:

  • What you collect: the buyer's email address, their answers to your checkout questions, their purchases and downloads (each download is logged with the time and IP address), and any rating or review they leave.
  • Why: to deliver the files, enforce download limits and handle refunds and disputes.
  • PDF stamping: if you turn it on, the buyer's email and purchase date are printed on every page of their copy.
  • How long you keep it: download records are deleted after 13 months, and stamped copies within 90 days of being made. Purchases are kept with your other sales records.

Also set a Refund policy for each product (see Refund policy), and decide whether you need the EU right to cancel waiver (see Questions).

Create a product

  1. Go to Settings → Products.
  2. Click Create product → Digital product.
  3. Under Details, enter a Name and a Description of what buyers get and who it is for. The description editor formats text with headings, bold, italic, lists, quotes, dividers and links, and you can add images to it; they upload to your board like the product images.
  4. Under Price, choose a Price type:
    • Free: people enter their email and get it at no cost.
    • Fixed price: everyone pays the same price. Choose the Currency and Price.
    • Pay what you want: buyers choose what to pay, from your Minimum up. Add a Suggested amount to fill in at checkout. A minimum of 0 lets people pay nothing.
  5. Under Content, add files and links (see below).
  6. Click Create product.

Paid products need Stripe connected; free products work without it. Turn on E-book or e-publication for books, newspapers, magazines, sheet music or maps delivered as files. Some countries charge a lower VAT rate on these, and Cavuno gives the product the matching tax code. The lower rate applies when your board collects tax with Stripe Tax. If you're not sure your product qualifies, check with your accountant.

A new product starts unlisted. Click its row to open the edit drawer, fill in the product page, then turn on List on your board when you are ready (see visibility).

The Content section lists what buyers get, in the order they see it. A product holds up to 50 files and links.

  • Add files: drop files on the box or browse. Each file can be up to 500 MB. The upload keeps going while you edit the rest of the form; Stop upload cancels it.
  • Add link: a page buyers open instead of a file, such as a template to copy or a booking page. Enter a Name and a full Link starting with https://.

Drag the handle on a row to reorder it. Each row's menu has Rename… (buyers see this name and download the file under it), Download, Copy checksum (the file's SHA-256), Replace file…, Disable or Enable, and Delete….

Accepted file types

Buyers can be sold PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, CSV, TXT, EPUB, ZIP, PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, MP3 and MP4 files. Cavuno reads the type from the file's contents, not from its name.

Programs and installers, HTML, SVG, XML and scripts, macro-enabled and older Office formats (such as .doc, .xls and .docm), and files whose type cannot be identified are not sold. Save an older Office file in the current format (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx), without macros, or as a PDF. A ZIP is virus-scanned with everything inside it.

Checks on every file

Every file is checked before any buyer can get it: its type is read from its contents and it is scanned for viruses. PDFs also have their page count read, and are test-stamped so you know whether stamping will work on them. The page count and file size appear on the product page's facts.

Checks take from a few seconds to a few minutes for the largest files. A product needs at least one file or link that is Ready before it can be listed or bought.

File badges

Each file shows one badge:

BadgeWhat it means
UploadingThe file is on its way from your browser. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
Upload failedThe upload stopped. Remove the row and add the file again.
Checking fileThe upload finished and the file is being checked.
ReadyBuyers get this file.
Uploading new version, Checking new versionA replacement is on its way or being checked. Buyers keep the current version until it passes.
Can't be stampedA PDF that is damaged or needs a password to open. Buyers get it unstamped. To stamp it, save the PDF again without a password (for example with "Print to PDF") and replace the file.
Malicious file detectedThe virus scan found a threat. The file is never delivered, and your team is emailed the threat's name. Your other files are not affected. Check the file on your computer, then upload a clean copy.
Couldn't be checkedThe scan could not finish, so the file is not delivered. Upload it again. If it keeps failing, it may be damaged or too complex to scan.
BlockedA file type that is not sold. The team email says why.
DisabledHidden from new buyers. People who bought before you disabled it keep it.

Links show no badge: there is nothing to check.

Your team gets an email for Malicious file detected, Couldn't be checked, Blocked and Can't be stamped, with a link to the product.

Replace a file

Replace file… uploads a new version of a file. Past buyers get the new version from their download page, and stamped PDFs are made again for each buyer.

Buyers keep the current version until the new one passes its checks. If the new version fails, the current version stays in place and you get the team email.

Tick Let buyers know to email everyone who bought the product a link to the new version (the Digital product updated email). It is off by default. Refunds that ended access and sales whose access you ended are skipped.

Disable or delete

  • Disable hides a file or link from new buyers. Everyone who bought before keeps it. Enable gives it back to new buyers.
  • Delete… removes it for everyone, including people who already bought it, after you confirm. The stored file is removed after a 7-day grace period.

A listed product keeps at least one ready file or link. To delete the last one, turn off List on your board first.

Product page

The edit drawer's Product page section sets what buyers see before they buy:

  • Images: up to 8 JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF images, up to 10 MB each. The first image is the cover.
  • Summary: one line at the top of the facts box, such as "You'll get a 48-page report and the raw data".
  • Details: up to 12 label and value pairs shown next to the buy button, such as Format: PDF or Updated: Quarterly. Set a row's type to Yes/No to show a tick or a cross instead of a value, such as for Lifetime updates. The page also shows each file's type, size and page count.
  • Show number of sales: shows how many people bought the product next to the buy button. It is off by default.
  • URL slug: the product page's address on your board. The drawer shows the full link under the field, and the drawer's header links to the live page.

The buy button says Buy now, or Get it free on a free product, in your board's language. That wording is part of your board's site, like the rest of its text: ask the AI Builder to change it for every product at once.

Checkout

The Checkout section sets what happens before a buyer pays.

Questions

Add up to 10 Questions that buyers answer before they pay (and before they claim a free product). Each is a Text, Checkbox or Dropdown question (1 to 20 options, one per line), and any can be Required. Answers are saved with the sale and shown in View details on Transactions. Checkbox answers also appear in the buyer's purchase email.

EU right to cancel waiver adds a required checkbox with this wording, which you can edit:

I want immediate access and waive my 14-day right to cancel once the download starts

Consumers in the EU normally have 14 days to cancel an online purchase. For digital content they can give up that right when they ask for immediate access, and the seller has to confirm their consent in writing. The waiver question collects that consent, and the purchase email that repeats the answer is the written confirmation. You are the seller, so whether you need it, and its wording, is your call.

Sales limit

Sales limit stops selling after that many sales. Leave it empty for no limit. Free claims count toward the limit. When the limit is reached, the product shows as sold out and checkout is refused.

Someone who was already in checkout when the last sale went through can still finish paying. Their sale stands and they get their download, and your team gets a "Sold past the sales limit" email. To keep selling, raise or remove the limit; to undo that sale, refund it from Transactions.

Refund policy

Refund policy is shown at checkout and saved with each sale, so you can see the terms a buyer agreed to.

Delivery

After paying (or claiming a free product), the buyer lands on their download page and gets an email with a link back to it. The Delivery section sets the rest:

  • Thank-you message: shown on the download page and in the purchase email.
  • Downloads per file: how many times each buyer can download each file, from 1 to 1000 (5 by default). Reset a buyer's downloads from Transactions.
  • Stamp PDFs with the buyer's email: each buyer gets their own copy of every PDF with their email and purchase date in the footer of each page. Bookmarks and page sizes are kept.

Stamped copies are made in the background right after the purchase. While a copy is being made, the download page shows it as being prepared, and the buyer is emailed when it is ready (the Digital product copy ready email). Turning stamping on for a product with past sales stamps their copies in the background too.

Downloads come from a private, signed link that works for a limited time (10 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the file's size). Every download is logged, and Download all gives the buyer a single ZIP of every ready file, counting one download of each. It is offered when those files total 500 MB or less; above that, the buyer downloads them one by one.

The download link in the purchase email is the buyer's key to their files. A link forwarded to someone else asks for the purchase email before it opens, so downloads stay with the buyer. The buyer opening their own link, or signed in to your board with the purchase email, goes straight through.

Ratings and reviews

Turn on Let buyers rate this product to let buyers give 1 to 5 stars and an optional comment from their download page. Only buyers can review, once per purchase, and they can change their review later. Refunded and disputed purchases do not count toward the rating. The product page shows the average and the reviews.

The Ratings and reviews section lists every review, newest first. Click Reply under a review (or Edit reply once you have replied) to write a public reply in place, then Save reply. Each review's menu has Hide or Show. Hidden reviews leave the product page and the rating.

Visibility

List on your board puts the product in your board's product list. Turn it off and only people with the link can buy it, which suits a product you share in a newsletter, a course or a private community. Either way, the product page works for anyone with its link once the product has a ready file or link.

To stop selling a product entirely, open its row menu in Settings → Products and archive it. Buyers keep their download pages.

Sales in Transactions

Open the product's row menu in Settings → Products and choose View sales, or Copy link to copy the product page link. View sales opens Transactions filtered to the product. Click the Product: chip's close button, or Show all transactions, to see every sale again.

Each row shows the buyer's email, the amount (or Free), Downloads (the most-downloaded file's count against the per-file limit, such as 2 of 5), status and date. The row menu has:

  • View details: the buyer's Answers to your questions and, for paid sales, View receipt.
  • Reset downloads: gives the buyer their downloads back on every file.
  • Resend download link: emails the buyer their download link again.
  • Correct buyer email…: fixes a mistyped email. The download link stays the same. Tick Send the download link to the new address to resend it there. People who opened a shared link with the old email are asked again, and stamped PDFs are made again with the new address.
  • Refund…: refunds a paid sale in full or in part. Tick Also end access to take the download page away too.
  • End access… and Restore access: take the download page away without refunding, or give it back. No money moves.

Free claims have no payment, so they have no Refund…, but they do have End access… and Restore access. A buyer whose access has ended sees that on their download page and cannot download. Resetting downloads, resending the link and correcting the email need permission to manage products; refunds and ending access follow the same rules as on every board sale.

Your team also gets a "Digital product sold" email for each paid sale.

Buyer emails

Buyers get four emails, each in your board's branding and language. Edit them in the Email editor under Digital products:

  • Digital product purchase: the download link, the thank-you message, checkbox answers and, for paid sales, the receipt link.
  • Digital product copy ready: their stamped PDF is ready.
  • Digital product updated: a file was replaced and you ticked Let buyers know.
  • Digital product download link: sent when the buyer asks for their link again, or when you resend it.

What buyers see

  1. The product page shows the cover and images, description, price and buy button, the facts box, and reviews when they are on.
  2. Buying opens a short step for their email and your questions. A free product also offers your board's job alerts, unticked. A paid product then opens Stripe's checkout on your board.
  3. The download page lists each file with a download button and the downloads left, plus Download all, the receipt for paid sales, and the review form when ratings are on.
  4. The purchase email links back to the download page. Anyone can ask for their link again from the product page by entering their email.
  5. Buyers who sign in to your board with the same verified email see every purchase in their account.

Automate with the API and AI agents

Everything above is also in the Operator API and the Cavuno MCP connector: creating and editing products, uploading files, listing sales, resetting downloads, resending links, correcting emails, refunding sales, ending and restoring access, and replying to reviews. The connector does not have tools for refunds or ending access yet, so do those in the dashboard or through the API. The digital_product.purchased and digital_product.refunded webhooks tell your other tools about each sale. See Digital products in the SDK guide for the endpoints.

Next steps

Connect Stripe to sell paid products, then create your first product and list it once its files show Ready.
