Search distance on city pages

City and suburb job pages now include nearby jobs, 25 miles by default in the US, UK and a few other countries and 50 km elsewhere. Visitors can change the distance or choose the exact location only.

A city page now lists jobs a short commute away, not only jobs inside the city's boundary. The results line says how far the search reaches: "Showing 1–20 jobs within 25 mi ⌄ of Houston".

  • Select the distance to choose Exact location only or 5, 10, 25, 50, or 100
  • Distances are in miles in the United States, United Kingdom, Liberia, and Myanmar and kilometres everywhere else
  • The default is 25 mi in miles countries and 50 km elsewhere
  • The choice is kept in the URL as ?within=, and survives paging and filter changes
  • City and locality pages get the menu, including their category and skill combinations. Region and country pages are unchanged

Search engines see one page per place. The plain city URL is the indexed page. Any URL with a chosen distance is noindex and points its canonical at the plain URL. A city with no jobs of its own, only nearby ones, is noindex too, so it does not rank on a neighbour's jobs. Sitemaps are unchanged.

For custom frontends, the jobs API radius parameter now widens a city or locality location to nearby jobs (1–250 km, decimals allowed). Without radius a location search returns the place only. If you already send radius, city and locality searches now include nearby jobs. The SDK adds searchRadiusOptions, defaultSearchRadius, and formatDistance to build the same menu.

Available on every plan.
